lipsmackin

if you're like me, you love a good cosmetic bargain- and you also have a tendency to leave lipgloss in the car on hot days until it bubbles and boils and separates, rendering it useless, and need a constant supply of lipcare products.
remember wet 'n wild? the trashy makeup of our youth? they changed their packaging (unfortunately not their name) and i was really drawn to this tinted chapstick for $2.
it's nice, slightly minty, a touch of color, and super cheap. i think you should buy some. i bought "a touch of bronze" -it's much lighter in person than it is here. i'm hoping that "a touch of bush" is a typo, and not an actual color.

one night with a terrible movie.

I got "One NIght with the King" (based on Queen Esther) from Netflix and Debbie and I started it while eating dinner the other night. I thought it would be cute, I mean, it's basically a Cinderella story, but an empowered Cinderella that rescues her race from destruction. It's not like watching The Passion of the Christ or anything... I mean, I used to have this Queen Esther book I loved and the pictures were of these beautiful tan Persian women wearing flowy abdomen baring get-ups. I mean, this was before Aladdin, so it was pretty racy in my book.
We got, oh, 30 seconds into it before realizing that it was going to be pretty terrible. After hearing one too many crappy (british? austrialian?) accents, I quickly finished my pizza and got up to work on the computer.
Debbie, however, gave me the play by play from the couch, and I think the worst part was: "Abby. She just said 'Hi!' to a butterfly.
It was turned off shortly after that.

I mean we're girls, we like love stories. But come on, folks, we're not 8 year old pansies. I think I'll go watch fight club.
Seriously. At least that love story's got some depth.
"Marla... the little scratch on the roof of your mouth that would heal if only you could stop tonguing it, but you can't."

p.s. this is my 100th post! thanks for reading, readers!

projects

obsessed with improving my bathroom, i lined the cabinet with this vintage mushroom print contact paper- which i almost didn't buy (because i feared it may never be put to good use)- until my sister said- "are you crazy? it's 35 cents!" thanks, laura, you were right:

the second thing i did this week is a custom shirt i made for a friend who asked me to keep an eye out for a tshirt with this saying on it. i never found one, so i made her one myself.

summer salvation

i forgot about:
makeup melting in my hot car
the smell of warm pavement
sleeping blanketless, covered in a sheet
never wearing socks
short-sleeved evenings
the urge to throw sunscreen and sandals in my car and drive to the beach
how much easier it is to like people when it's sunny
eating drippy ice pops, one after another
how wind can be a sweet relief, rather than a curse-inducing annoyance
skirts!
eventually realizing that my eyeliner and and eyeshadow and mascara and blush and foundation and lipgloss will all just slip off my face in the heat, and baring my naked face, and looking better that way.

weekends are relaxing.

saturday morning.
8:02 am-
oh my gosh i hate this freaking scummy, plain-ass bathroom. i don't know how i have lived here for this long and let it stay this boring-ass, drab, non-color. no wonder debbie and i sit at the kitchen table to put on makeup- look at it in here. it's the most crappy, depressing...wait, don't i have leftover paint in my closet?

9:37 am
ah. much better.

graceful, as always.

despite the fact that I only made about 40 bucks last night at Lucky, I still felt the need to buy my first pair of Lucky Jeans.
I gotta say, they're pretty nice. Not body-transforming, but they have some definite advantages. And I'm a sucker for colored stitching. Even at 60% off, this is most I have ever spent on jeans. That didn't stop me from knocking my diet coke off the counter at a bar last night and spilling it all over my new jeans.

cute couple

found next to rodale parking lot.

let's pretend we don't love selling out.

Read here what I discovered last night- while listening to radio in my car (I only have a tape player and my pod was dead...) I heard a familiar song- but wait, I was listening to a commercial for Out back Steakhouse so how could it be familiar- and then my heart skipped a beat as I realized the tune to "let's pretend we're in Antartica" was replaced by the crude jingle's "start the weekend two days earlier" WHAT?
Of Montreal, come on! I mean, ok, so you wanna make some extra cash, or as the article says "...We thought it would be totally amusing to hear their take on one of our songs as a jingle" but OUTBACK Steakhouse??? They are the crazy uncle of overpriced food chains. sigh.
This is why I revert back to the music of my youth. See here.

making ends meet

i'm trying not to spend money right despite an urgent and pressing craving for some jimmy eat world- i listened to the hype machine all day at work, then waited to see if the library had it (they didn't) or if the compact disc center had one or three used copies of their albums (no dice). All my beloved j.e.w. cd's are scratched and worn with love. And listen- any prestigious music snobs out there, I don't care what you're saying in your head right now- he has a good voice and the music makes me shimmy and feel young and wanna make out in the back seat of a volvo and then go home and slam my bedroom door, and in my book, that's some fine music- better than some of the redonkulous crap that's out there and considered cool right now.
Annnyways, what I was gonna say was- I'm trying not to spend money and lo and behold I have run out of:
face wash
face exfoliator
foundation
toner
serum
moisturizer
ALL AT THE SAME TIME. How did that HAPPEN?
Of course, all of those products aren't necessary, but used in unison, they make my entire face smoother than silk and glowing.
Without any of them, I'll be an oily, crater-faced, flaky faced monster who sulks around alleyways, hiding her face from humanity...so I'm left with no choice, really.
Wish Ikea manufactured skincare.

wok out

i'll use any excuse possible to use my wok, and tonight i had a great reason: lettuce wraps.
i lacked many ingredients (including ginger and water chestnuts, which i substituted with ginger powder and cashews) and was a bit heavy handed with cayenne, but they were still pretty good- first time i made them but i'd definitely do it again.

if you can't take the heat

after weeks of managing to survive on cereal and toast, last week i finally decided to cook some dinner.
the menu was oven friend chicken, bruschetta, and watermelon. rice crispies for dessert. that's right, i still eat like a picky five year old. although to be fair, i made it for a friend who's far pickier than myself.

all of 'em

yet another reason, 4 actually, why i'm so lucky.

kentucky tastes like...

catching up

did you see my pictures from kentucky? i didn't think so. i got a cable for my camera (thanks, zach) so here's all the good ones i've been storing up.

farm livin is the life for me

I went to the first meeting for the New community garden located in Southside Bethlehem. There weren't alot of people there, but it was really exciting and I think it could be really cool.
What is it about the idea of farmin' and plantin' and hoein' and harvestin' that gets everyone in my family's blood pumping?
I thought I was adopted for a while- for both not having a garden and being skeptical of veggies. But I'm pretty much the opposite now, working at a garden magazine, love to cook fresh vegetables, and now, will have my own little plot of land to live off of.

the japanese tree print is the one i bought, the charcoal gray, thermal-tee-lined, 4 pocketed, "maverick" hoodie is the one i'm currently lusting for.
